Sarah Jamieson

Specialist Speech & Language Therapist:
BSc (Hons), MA Autism, MRCSLT, MASLTIP, HCPC

I qualified as a Speech and Language Therapist at Newcastle University in 2008. I started my career working with preschool children and quickly developed my passion in supporting autistic children with their language and communication.

I previously worked in the NHS for 15 years, comprising of community, school-based, inpatient and specialist teams, including a second opinion autism assessment team. I have worked in mainstream and specialist nurseries and schools. Across these roles I’ve gained specialist skills in assessing an individual’s language and communication profile through observation and formal standardised assessment. These assessments contribute towards an individual’s multidisciplinary neurodevelopmental assessment taking into consideration autism, ADHD and mental health.

Within Autism North East I am passionate in my work to identify and support individuals with language and communication needs. These needs are often ‘hidden’ and so without correct identification individuals can be left without the right support to achieve their potential. I have attended extensive specialist training which contribute to our neurodevelopmental assessments including Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS), Brief Observation Schedule of Autism (BOSA), Social Communication Emotional Regulation Transactional Support (SCERTS) and Autism Clinical Interview for Adults (ACIA).

I completed a Masters degree in autism with distinction at Northumbria University and postgraduate courses in Children’s Mental Health. I am trained in a range of therapy approaches including the National Autistic Society Early Bird Plus, Makaton, Social Stories and Paediatric Autism Communication Therapy (PACT). I was a research therapist for a large national autism research project into PACT. I aim to work in a neuro affirming way to provide support and adaptations that develop understanding to affirm an individual’s neurotype.
